Harvard's Bromfield School, St. John's Preparatory School, St. Paul the Apostle School, Christ School, Rahway High School, and students in schools throughout Chicago hosted fundraising events and raised awareness for their Darfuri peers in eastern Chad.
Harvard's Bromfield School Starts Darfur Dream Team Chapter
Students at Harvard's Bromfield School have started a new club to raise awareness and funds for the children of Sultan Tadjadine School in Djabal refugee camp in eastern Chad. The Darfur Dream Team: Bromfield Chapter received club status at their school at the beginning of this school year. The club is a great way to improve educational opportunities for Darfuri refugee children while simultaneously educating themselves. "I had only a very general understanding of the turmoil in the Darfur region," says Gionne Wagner, the club's faculty advisor. Chicago Schools Rock 'n' Raise for Darfur
On Valentines Day, over 400 people came together at a concert in Chicago to show their love not just for each other but also for Darfuri refugees in eastern Chad at the legendary “Metro” music club. Local and national musical acts including Madina Lake, The Blisters, Big Science, Brendan Kelley of the Lawrence Arms, and the DePaul Prelude Choir performed before an energetic crowd of activists and music fans. Student organizers handed out petitions, sold t-shirts, and raffled off exciting prizes to raise funds. This concert was hosted as a part of Rock ‘n’ Raise for Darfur, a Chicago-based, month-long fundraising campaign that took place throughout February.
St. John's Perparatory School Demonstrates Committment to Sister School
St. John’s Preparatory School in Danvers, Massachusetts has launched several programs to fundraise for Sultan Tajadine School, its sister school in Djabal refugee camp.To read more about their iniatives, click here.
The students at St. John’s are learning about the Darfur crisis, and they are planning to host a public event to educate their wider community about the crisis. The school’s acapela group, Swingtown, has agreed to donate all proceeds from their concerts and CD sales to their sister school, as well. Proceeds from Swingtown’s last CD raised approximately $10,000 and they hope to raise a similar amount for our program this year. Visit at www.darfurdreateam.org to sign up for the program.
St. Paul Students Sport “Denim for Darfur”
St. Paul the Apostle School in Los Angeles, California continues to be a standout sister school. St. Paul's strives to help its students build strong moral character by using a value-centered curriculum taught from a global perspective. To date, St. Paul has raised over $4,600 for Dorotie, their sister school located in Djabal refugee camp through their “Denim for Darfur” fundraiser. Generally, St. Paul has students wear uniforms to school.“Denim for Darfur” gives students the chance to wear jeans and their favorite Darfur or school t-shirt for the day if they donate $5 towards their sister school. Rahway High School Hosts Sucessful International Dinner
Rahway High School in Rahway, New Jersey hosted an International Dinner to raise funds for their sister school, Sultan Tajadine, on December 11, 2009. At the dinner, guests were educated about the on-going crisis in Darfur and were able to view profiles of Darfuri students at Rahway’s sister school. Approximately 200 people attended the event.
High School Basketball Powerhouse Plans Fundraising Drive
Christ School, the reigning NCISSA 3-A Basketball State Champion, in Asheville, North Carolina plans to kick off a fundraising drive for the Sister Schools Program.
Students in Christ School’s "Ethics in International Affairs" class recently presented information about the program at a school-wide assembly. The school now plans to collect donations for their sister school, Sultan Tajadine, at basketball games. Other planned activities include holding bake sales, selling t-shirts, hosting basketball contests, and collecting a special offertory at chapel services this spring.
